Balayage vs. Highlights: Which One Is Right for You?
Two of the most popular questions in our chair at Élan Spa and Hair in Northbrook: “Should I get balayage or highlights?” and “What’s the difference, anyway?” Both brighten your hair with lighter pieces, but they are done differently, they grow out differently, and they suit different lifestyles. Here is a simple guide.
What are highlights?
Traditional highlights are placed in foils, in a planned pattern from close to the root down to the ends. The result is even, defined brightness all over the head (full highlights) or around the face and part line (partial highlights). Because the color starts near the scalp, regrowth shows more clearly, so most clients come back every 6–10 weeks.
What is balayage?
Balayage is a French word meaning “to sweep.” The color is painted by hand onto the surface of the hair, heavier toward the ends and softer near the root. The result is a natural, sun-kissed look with a soft grow-out — many clients go 3–4 months between appointments.
How to choose
- You want bright, all-over lightness — highlights (full).
- You want a natural, low-maintenance look — balayage.
- You want a fresh look without a big commitment — partial highlights around the face.
- You have dark hair and want to go lighter gradually — balayage, often finished with a glaze/toner.
Don’t skip the toner
After lightening, a glaze or toner adjusts the shade — cooler, warmer, more golden or more ash — and adds shine. Ask your colorist; it makes a big difference in how polished your color looks.
